Roots: Rotherham Street Carnival is back in the town centre this weekend, bringing music, performances, puppetry, art and a spectacular carnival parade!
The free event on Saturday March 28 features a carnival parade that begins at 3pm outside Rotherham Minster and weaves through the streets of Rotherham town centre.
Giant puppets will appear alongside banners made by Children’s Capital of Culture, community artworks, musical performances and local performance groups.
The ‘Spirit of the North’ by Cabasa is coming to Rotherham and taking centre stage in the parade. Elements of this large puppet have been co-created by four groups in Rotherham, featuring stories and imagery celebrating Rotherham’s Cultural and Natural Heritage. There will be dedicated viewing areas for the parade at All Saints’ Square, Snails Yard and Market Square.
In the build up to the parade free creative workshops will take place 11am–3pm for all ages and abilities to enjoy.
Workshops will take place in Grimm & Co, the magical literacy charity on Ship Hill, where you can write your own message to the magical beings of nature and add it to a collective parade piece!
In the Imperial Buildings, you can join Rotherham Music for a Samba Band workshop! Try out new instruments, make lots of noise, and create exciting
carnival rhythms with your friends and family before joining the public Samba Band in the parade.
Stalls on Bridgegate will include activities by local organisations and charities sharing their knowledge and insights alongside the Goodysphere Sensory Bus.
All Saints’ Square will host the Pavilion of the Hopeful Sun, a giant interactive structure created and produced by Wild Rumpus. The pavilion will host
four creative workshops where you can make your own carnival costume with arts company Cabasa using sustainable materials.
Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy roaming performances and entertainment ahead of the parade, from the Enchanted Woodlands, Out of The Deep, Parading Pigeons, the Museum of Memorable Trees and Bollywood Brass Band.
