Tales Untapped: A Rotherham Opera

A unique new opera will premier as a defining event for Rotherham as the Children's Capital of Culture 2025.

Tales Untapped: A Rotherham Opera is a collaboration between the Royal Ballet & Opera, Rotherham Music Service and Grimm & Co that aims to celebrate the imagination, talent and artistry of young people across the Rotherham area.

On 25 and 26 November 2025, more than 1,500 young people will perform the opera at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, alongside a cast of professional singers and orchestra.

Inspired by Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’, the work has been co-designed with young people across Rotherham, using storytelling, composition and design workshops to create key thematic material for the opera.

Schools participating in the performance are learning six songs to perform as part of the whole work with the help of composer Lucy Mulgan, director Rosie Kat and conductor John Lyon.

The learning is an extension of the Royal Ballet & Opera's Create and Sing programme, equipping teachers with the confidence and skillset to develop outstanding dramatic singing in their students.

A spokesperson for Rotherham Music said: "With sweeping storylines, powerful music and wonderful choreography, the children and young people of Rotherham are ready to wow crowds with their very own opera, done their way."
