Rotherham pub named amongst UK's best

I'll drink to that! A pub in Rotherham town centre has again been named as one of the very best the country has to offer.

The Telegraph has recently published its expert guide to the best pubs in the UK showcasing 500 pubs in England and 650 across the UK.

The list includes The Cutlers Arms on Westgate, the Grade II-listed pub renovated by Rotherham's own Chantry Brewery.

The criteria for inclusion covers "charming character, welcoming staff, rich history and, of course, award-winning beer."

Chantry Brewery opened in 2012 after significant investment in the latest brewing technology installed at its Parkgate facility.

Opened in 2014, the Cutlers is one of the few surviving Edwardian buildings in the town centre. There was a previous Cutler's Arms on the site before the current building, the first appearing in a directory of 1825. The pub was rebuilt in 1866, when it became a Stones tied house. The 1907 rebuilding was part of a general rebuilding in Westgate to provide a broader highway into the town to relieve traffic congestion.

The building was restored inside and out with the owners keeping the very traditional public house model - with the bar serving beers, by means of hand pumps, in three rooms. Traditional furniture, in keeping with the age and traditional nature of the premises, has been sourced, and elements such as a stained glass window and etched glass windows damaged after the pub closed last year have been replaced to their original specification.

A popular stop for football fans visting Rotherham United's New York Stadium just over the river, the Cutlers has also become a focal point for live music with both indoor and outdoor stages.

Experts at The Telegraph visited all four corners of the UK and every pub on the list, picking out pubs for their atmosphere; "fixtures and fittings that engender warmth happiness and cosiness"; good prices, good beer, particularly cask ale; and a sense of place.
