£130,000 has been secured for a project that will focus on the lived experiences and entertainment culture of social clubs from the 1950s to the 1990s.
For decades, these "Palladiums" were the beating heart of northern community life, acting as vital social infrastructure where generations gathered for music, dancing, friendship and celebrations.
The project will highlight iconic venues such as the Greasbrough Working Men’s Social Club, which reportedly hosted international stars including Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Englebert Humperdinck and homegrown superstar talent including Ronnie Dukes and Ricki Lee, alongside all local venues like the Silver Dollar Club in Maltby and the now lost ‘Tanic’ Club in Rawmarsh.
Helen Jones, Director at Flux Rotherham, said: “We are thrilled to have received this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players this heritage will be uncovered and celebrated, much of this history is held in the memories of older residents... as this generation ages, opportunities to capture first-hand accounts are rapidly diminishing. Once lost, this knowledge cannot be recovered."
A multi-year project over the next two years (2026–2028), Palladiums of the North will engage with local residents to record oral histories and digitise items of memorabilia, including photographs, programmes, and tickets which will be preserved by Rotherham Archives. These personal collections, often tucked away in lofts and garages, are at risk of being lost or deteriorating.
Residents, former club-goers, family members and performers are being invited to share their stories to help create a major immersive installation at Clifton Park Museum, featuring archive material and storytelling through 2028 and a Grand Finale immersive performance event at Rotherham Show in partnership with Rotherham Civic Theatre featuring local performers and professional artists.
Securing a lasting legacy Palladiums of the North is designed to ensure these stories are never forgotten. In partnership with Rotherham Museums, Arts and Heritage, all collected materials will be professionally catalogued and transferred into the Rotherham Archives and Local Studies for long-term safeguarding and easy access for communities.
This project shifts the focus from traditional industrial or architectural history to the "everyday heritage" that defines community identity and belonging.
